When to Get Rid of Your Makeup & Skincare Products

Most people don’t realize makeup and skincare can expire and just continue using products long after they should be tossed. Makeup dries out as it comes in contact with air, so 1st off you’ll start to have a problem with application. Lipsticks will drag across the lip, mascara will be flaky and clumpy, eyeshadows and blushes will be cakey on the face and sometimes they can even get chunky in the pan.

If that’s not bad enough, makeup also starts to accumulate bacteria the more it comes into contact with your skin. And bacteria thrives in dark damp places, so the perfect places for it are mascara and lip products especially. These bacteria’s can cause a whole slew of problems, the most common being irritation, breakouts, and contributing to acne. But even worse, it could cause infections on your face, like pink eye, blisters, or even swelling of your skin. So let’s go through a little timeline of what should be tossed when!

  • 2 – 3 Months – Mascara and face masks
  • 6 Months – 1 Year – Liquid liner, liquid foundation, concealer, eye cream, serums, face wash
  • 1 – 1.5 years – Lip gloss, cream shadows, face cream (in a jar), brow gel
  • 2 Years – Lip & eye pencils, lipstick, powder shadows, blush, powder foundation

Do you throw out your products on time? Or are you guilty like me for keeping some things past their recommended expiration date?
